General description

The National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) is one of the primary data collection programs of the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) and the primary source of information on a broad range of health topics of the United States civilian noninstitutionalized population. NHIS is unique for its ability to categorize health characteristics by demography and socioeconomic characteristics, and its data are widely used to monitor trends in disability and illness, for epidemiologic and policy analysis of timely issues, and to determine barriers to accessing and using appropriate health care.

The NHIS's annual Cancer Control Supplement, jointly supported by the NCI and CDC, is conducted with a randomly chosen adult in each surveyed household. The data collected from the NHIS-CCS is pivotal for overseeing the cancer control targets set by the Healthy People initiative. Moreover, this data is frequently utilized in the NCI’s report on Cancer Trends Progress and has been cited in a variety of scholarly articles.

The CCS focuses on issues pertaining to attitudes, knowledge, and practices of cancer-related health behaviors, screening, and risk assessment. The CCS covers various topics rotating, including, but not limited to Cancer Risk Assessment; Cancer Screening; Diet and Nutrition; Family History of Cancer; Genetic Testing; Physical Activity; Sun Protection; Tobacco Use and Control.
