General description

The National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) is one of the major data collection programs of the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) and the primary source of information on a broad range of health topics of the United States civilian noninstitutionalized population.

NHIS is unique for its ability to categorize health characteristics by a variety of demographic and socioeconomic characteristics and its data are widely used to monitor trends in disability and illness and for epidemiologic and policy analysis of timely issues as characterizing those with various health problems, and determining barriers to accessing and using appropriate health care.
