General description

The National Cancer Database (NCDB) is a clinical oncology database sourced from hospital registry data collected in more than 1,500 Commission on Cancer-accredited facilities. These data represent more than 70 percent of the USA's diagnosed cancer cases, with more than 34 million historical records.

Variable categories

  • Patient characteristics;
  • Comorbidities;
  • Staging data;
  • Clinical and pathologic stages, and a combination of them (these variables can be used to select patients);
  • Treatment information, including the receipt of chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery;
  • Readmission;
  • Survival outcomes, short- (30-, 60-, and 90-day mortality) and long-term 5-year overall survival;
  • There is an anonymous randomly generated facility ID, facility type, and class of case (indicates whether diagnosis, treatment, or both were performed at the index facility).

Limitations

  • The readmission assessment may not be reliable with the NCDB;
  • Only reports treatment that was used in the first six months after diagnosis;
  • The readmission data is only from patients that were readmitted to the same hospital within 30 days of discharge;
  • Reported surgical procedures only include the most definitive intervention;
