General description
The National Board of Health and Welfare (NBHW) maintains a health data registry called the National Cancer Register that maps the incidence of cancer and its variations throughout time.
The cancer registry is a valuable resource for planning, research, statistics, and cross-national comparisons. About 60,000 malignant cancer cases are reported annually in Sweden. All healthcare providers are required to report cases of newly discovered cancer to the registry.
Benefit and categories
Despite the name of the register, conditions that are benign, pre-malignant, or have an unknown potential for malignancy are also covered. Data must be reported on tumors and tumor-like conditions diagnosed in the health care through:
- Clinical autopsy.
- Clinical diagnostics, including radiological and other imaging examinations.
- Morphological diagnostics or other laboratory examination.
