General description

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is America's civil space program and the forerunner in space exploration. Comprising a diverse workforce of approximately 18,000 civil servants, NASA works with many more U.S. academia, contractors, and commercial and international partners to discover, explore, and expand knowledge for the benefit of humanity. NASA also supports over 312,000 jobs across the United States, studying Earth, its climate, the Sun, and our solar system and beyond at its twenty (20) centers and facilities spread across the country – and the National Laboratory in space.

DATA.NASA.GOV is NASA's central open-data site for the public and comprises thousands of public datasets. It aggregates data from different archives and datasets, ensuring that tens of thousands of datasets are available to the public, and is the dataset-focused site of NASA's OCIO (Office of the Chief Information Officer) open-innovation program. Occasionally, DATA.NASA.GOV only holds the metadata and link for each dataset, with other NASA data archive sites (API and Code holding the actual data. These data archives typically provide the public with datasets from a particular domain, field of science, or mission.
