General description

The MIMIC-III (Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care III) database is a freely-available relational database comprising comprehensive and de-identified clinical information on hospital stays for over 40,000 patients admitted to ICUs at a tertiary academic medical center (Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center) in the US, between 2001 and 2012.

Variable categories

  • Patient tracking information - patient demographics, mortality (both in and out of hospital), a record for each hospitalization, and a record for each ward stay within a hospitalization.
  • Procedures, vital sign measurements made at the bedside (~1 data point per hour), imaging reports, and caregiver notes, intravenous and fluid inputs, patient outputs, information documented as a date/time, and other charted information.
  • Outpatient laboratory test results, medication prescription, medication administration, laboratory measurements, microbiology cultures, provider orders, hospital billing information, and service-related information.

Linkage to other datasets

MIMIC-III database has been updated to MIMIC-IV which incorporates contemporary data, and improves and carries on the success of numerous aspects of MIMIC-III.
