General description
IPUMS contains data on censuses and surveys from different parts of the world. It integrates the data over time and space as well as incorporates area-level census data and electronic boundaries describing census geography from 1790 to the present. It also includes almost a billion records of censuses and over a billion records from the international censuses of over 100 countries.
Currently, IPUMS is available free, and it integrates microdata describing 1.4 billion individuals drawn from over 750 censuses and surveys.

Linkage to other datasets
- For the US census, linkages can be established for any dataset that might have a geolocation variable at the ZCT (ZIP Code Tabulation Areas) level or higher. The US census is conducted every ten years to give an official count of the entire U.S. population.
Limitations
- The public dataset's most granular level is the ZCT.
