General description

The NCI's Imaging Data Commons (IDC) is a cloud-based repository of publicly available cancer imaging data designed to provide access to standardized data using the Digital Imaging and Communication in Medicine (DICOM) standard.

IDC is populated using radiology collections from The Cancer Imaging Archive TCIA and data (analysis results and image annotations) collected by other major NCI initiatives, such as CPTAC, HTAN, NLST, and TCGA. As of late (October) 2022, IDC contains a wide variety of image types, including but not limited to:

  • Clinical and preclinical imaging,
  • Digital pathology images,
  • Expert assessments of the image findings (e.g., qualitative characterizations of lesion appearance);
  • Image annotations (e.g., planar and volumetric regions of interest);
  • Measurements derived from the images;
  • Multispectral microscopy images;
  • Parametric maps derived from images (e.g., perfusion and diffusion maps);
  • Radiological images (e.g., CT, MRI, PET).
