General description

  • The Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) is a group of healthcare databases and related software tools that includes the most extensive collection of hospital care data in the United States, beginning in 1988. These databases enable research on the cost and quality of health services, medical practice patterns, access to healthcare programs, and treatment outcomes at the national, state, and local market levels. This database is made up of data from:
    • Nationwide
      • National Inpatient Sample (NIS);
      • Kids’ Inpatient Database (KID);
      • Nationwide Ambulatory Surgery Sample (NASS);
      • Nationwide Emergency Department Sample (NEDS);
      • Nationwide Readmissions Database (NRD).
    • State-specific
      • State Inpatient Databases (SID);
      • State Ambulatory Surgery and Services Databases (SASD);
      • State Emergency Department Databases (SEDD).

Variable categories

  • HCUP
    • Inpatient care data. Source.
    • Kids' Inpatient Data. Source.
    • Readmission data. Source.
    • Ambulatory surgery data. Source.
    • Emergency department visits data, regardless of whether they result in admission. Source.

Linkage to other datasets

  • HCUP and AHA are linked between themselves and they can be aggregated.

Limitations

  • HCUP
    • Not all data elements are available from every State, and not in all the years.
    • Not all data elements in the NIS are uniformly coded across States.
    • Patients cannot be longitudinally followed, except regarding readmission
