General description

The Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) Project aims to increase our understanding of how gene changes contribute to common human diseases to improve health care for future generations.

Two types of donor groups participate in the GTEx project:

  1. Organ and tissue donors - individuals who have agreed to be organ (like heart, kidneys, and liver) and/or tissue (like bone and cornea) donors after they die. Donating to GTEx would not interfere with the use of the donor organ or tissues, which takes priority, and people who may not qualify as donors for transplants may still be eligible to donate tissues to GTEx for research.

  2. Surgical tissue donors - people who undergo certain kinds of surgery. Donating to the GTEx project will not cause additional tissue removal.

GTEx uses state-of-the-art protocols for obtaining and storing an extensive range of organs and tissues and testing them in the lab. This way, GTEx establishes a database and a tissue bank that many researchers worldwide can use for future studies.
