General description

The Global Cancer Observatory (GCO) is an interactive web-based platform developed by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), which is the specialized cancer agency of the World Health Organization (WHO). The GCO provides global cancer statistics to inform cancer control and research. One of its key tools is Cancer Tomorrow.

Cancer Tomorrow is a web-based application designed to project future cancer incidence and mortality worldwide. It allows users to estimate the number of new cancer cases and deaths up to the year 2040. These projections are based on demographic changes such as population growth and aging, assuming that current cancer rates remain constant over time.

The Global Cancer Observatory's Cancer Tomorrow (GCO-CTomorrow) serves as a vital resource for anticipating the future burden of cancer globally and regionally. Providing customizable and interactive projections assists stakeholders in making informed decisions to improve cancer prevention, detection, and treatment efforts.

Data Categories

  1. Data Export: Users can download the data and visualizations for use in reports, presentations, or further research.
  2. Customizable Projections: Users can generate projections by selecting specific cancer types, geographic regions or countries, sex, and age groups.
  3. Interactive Visualizations: The tool provides charts and graphs to visualize the projected data, making it easier to understand and analyze.

Limitations

  • Assumption of Constant Rates: The tool assumes that current cancer rates will remain unchanged, not accounting for future changes in risk factors, screening practices, or treatment advancements.
  • Exclusion of Risk Factor Trends: It does not incorporate potential increases or decreases in risk factors like smoking, obesity, or exposure to carcinogens.

Data access

Data access is public and can be accessed at GCO-Cancer Tomorrow.
