General Description

The Environmental Quality Index presents data in five domains: air, water, land, built, and sociodemographic environments (social determinants of health (SDOH)) to provide a county-by-county snapshot of overall environmental quality across the entire U.S.

The sociodemographic domain includes county-level data on percent renter-occupied, percent vacant units, median household value, median household income, percent of people with income below the poverty level, percent of people who do not report speaking English, percent of people with more than a high school level of education, percent of people unemployed, percent of people working outside the county, the median number of rooms per house, percent of housing with more than ten units, and the mean number of violent crimes per capita.

Meanwhile, the built environment domain includes:

  • County-level information on the proportion of roads that are highways,
  • The ratio of primary streets,
  • The percentage of the population using public transport,
  • Negative food-related businesses,
  • Positive food-related businesses,
  • Healthcare-related businesses, and
  • The total subsidized housing units.
