General description
In 2012, the Dutch Society of Lung Surgeons (NVvL) and the Dutch Society of Cardiothoracic Surgeons (NVT) collaborated with the Dutch Institute for Clinical Auditing to establish the Dutch Lung Surgery Audit (DLSA), a nationwide registry designed to monitor and evaluate the quality of lung operations in The Netherlands as a tool for improvement.
DLSA benefit and categories
Benefits
- For accurate measurement and comparison, the DLSA data set includes a large number of data points pertaining to every stage of the treatment.
- The most recent verification, which took place in 2016, reports 99.4% data completeness with no underreporting of deaths or complications.
- To reduce the burden of registration and improve the quality and dependability of data, synoptic reporting is designed to automate connections and data transfers between several data sources.
Categories
- Metastasectomy
- Benign lung and thoracic procedures
- Lung cancer and Mediastinal operations.
Limitations
- The fact that surgeons must enter their own data adds a significant administrative load to this.
- Data fraud is another possible negative consequence in addition to administrative weight.
- The data set is small and requires careful annual review to prevent unfavorable growth and to ensure that it remains appropriate for use in clinical practice.
- Another restriction relates to the DLSA's content. The audit's initial focus was on general lung surgeries, with a specific emphasis on non-small cell lung cancer. Patients undergoing lung transplantation or thymectomy, aside from children, are not yet able to register in the DLSA.
