General description

The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) is the primary system of health-related telephone surveys that collects data on healthcare access related to chronic diseases and injury, health-related risk behaviors, preventive health practices, social determinants of health (SHoH).

BRFSS completes over 400,000 adult interviews annually, making it a powerful tool for building health promotion activities and the largest continuously-conducted health survey system in the world.

Factors assessed by the BRFSS include alcohol consumption, breast- and cervical cancer screening, chronic health conditions, colorectal cancer screening, drinking and driving, e-cigarettes, exercise, falls, health care access, health status, healthy days/health-related quality of life, HIV/AIDS immunization, inadequate sleep, oral health, prostate cancer screening, seat belt use, and tobacco use.
