Potential applications to patient-centered research (use cases)

1. Use cases: in which situations should I use this method?

2. Input: what kind of data does the method require?

  • Encounters between clinicians and patients

3. Algorithm: how does the method work?

Model mechanics

Previous systematic reviews have shown that when clinical decisions are shared with patients, patient satisfaction levels go up [1]. Sometimes outcomes also might improve, the latter likely being related to adherence to treatment. While some patients might prefer to have clinicians make choices on their behalf, even their choice to have others making decisions is a form of shared decision making.

Shared decision making is often facilitated by decision aids [3] and/or calculators based on machine learning models.

Suggested companion methods

  • Qualitative and mixed methods research to investigate areas where shared decision making is more or less beneficial
  • Two-stage preference-based trials, where a regular parallel trial has a third arm where patients can choose to have or not shared decision-making sessions.
  • Machine learning models.
