- Since realist reviews focus on causes, they often precede causal modeling
- Existing articles focusing on causes of a given clinical phenomenon
Realist reviews are a strategy for synthesizing evidence and providing explanations focusing on causal mechanisms for conditions, exploring how these causal mechanisms work, e.g., why interventions may or may not work, how they work, and in what circumstances.
The typical phases for a realist review include: (a) defining the scope of the review; (b) searching for and verifying the quality of the evidence; (c) extracting and synthesizing the evidence; (d) developing the narrative.
Below are a few articles providing some guidance to the structure of a realist review:
- Protocol for a realist review of complex interventions to prevent adolescents from engaging in multiple riskbehaviours [1].
- Books
- Articles
- Realist synthesis: illustrating the method for implementation research [2].
- All in the Family: systematic reviews, rapid reviews, scoping reviews, realist reviews, and more [3].
- A realist review to understand the efficacy and outcomes of interventions designed to minimise, reverse or prevent the progression of frailty [4].
