Quick Start guide - spiritek/JoeyJrDocumentation GitHub Wiki

You can get a Joey Jr from https://bennvenn.myshopify.com/collections/game-cart-to-pc-interface/products/usb-gb-c-cart-dumper-the-joey-jr

The most recent firmware is also available on this page

This guide is completely unofficial and I am in no way associated with the manufacturer, all information is presented as is and is for information only

Usage

  1. Make sure you are on the latest firmware

  2. Clean the connectors on your cart Use a pencil eraser to run back and forth over the connecter to clean, or use isopropyl alcohol and a cotton swab, or both. This is very important, even though your game may run fine in a console it can still cause issues in the Joey Jr, and it is easier to clean the connector on the cart instead of 32 pins on the cartridge slot.

  3. Insert the cartridge into the cartridge slot on the Joey Jr

  4. For V1 Joey Jr with USB-B plug only - Set voltage jumper - 3.3v for GBA and any bootleg cart or 5v for GB/C

This is set automatically in V2 with USB-C

  5. Plug the USB Type B or C plug into the Joey

  6. Plug the other end into your computer

  7. The Joey Jr will appear as a USB drive with a number of files, similar to the below.

Directory structure:

DEBUG.TXT

FIRMWARE.JR (hidden)

FLASHTBL.RAW - Not present after firmware V2_02_00

MODE.TXT

MODE!.TXT (Only displayed if the Joey detects a checksum error, clean the cartridge connector and make sure it is inserted correctly)

ROMLIST.RAW

And depending on the type of cart a *.GBA or GBC, a .SAV file (one or possibly all types of save files if the cartridge is not in the ROMLIST), and possibly an .RTC file if the cart has that functionality

NOTE: For Gameboy Camera you will have to set the mode to GBC in the MODE.TXT file (Just have the text GBC in the first line of the file) or after firmware V2_02_01 putting CAM into the MODE.TXT will dump the camera images to the root of the Joey Jr as bitmaps (.bmp)

Cartridge dumping

Copy the *.GBA/GBC (ROM file will be named based on the header of the cart inserted), and save file, and rtc file (if applicable) to your PC, play in emulator, copy to a blank flash cart, or whatever you want

Flashing

Copy any valid *.GBA/GBC ROM file and the Joey Jr will flash correctly, make sure that the ROM file you are copying is compatible with the writeable cart you are using.

Usually games that use batteries to hold the save will need to be patched to work with most flash carts.

You can check in DEBUG.TXT if your flash cart is compatible. It'll say flash detected, or not

Upgrading firmware

NOTE:

If upgrading the firmware from 1.X you will need to use the V2_01_04 first

If upgrading from a firmware below V2_02_00 but greater than or on V2_01_04 you need to install V2_02_00 first, then you can install a firmware greater than V2_02_00

IMPORTANT NOTE: From the store page

Only update your Ver1 Joey Jr on a WINXP/7 USB2.0 machine (Real or VM) - Other machines will work but run the risk of bricking and your joey will need to be returned for reflashing - or you can manually reflash with a STLINK programmer) There is no risk of bricking from V2 firmware onwards., then you will be able to update to any newer version.

For versions V2_02_15 and greater

  1. Download latest archive from the bottom of the store page here - at the time of writing that is V2_02_29
  2. Extract to a directory on your local machine
  3. Edit the MODE.TXT file and placing the text UPDATE in the first line, the Joey Jr will disconnect and reconnect in UPDATE mode
  4. Copy the files into the root directory of the Joey Jr The Joey Jr will disconnect and reconnect and automatically be set in AUTO mode, if it doesn't reconnect after around 30 seconds disconnect and reconnect manually

For versions before V2_02_15

  1. Download latest archive from the bottom of the store page here - at the time of writing that is V2_02_29
  2. Extract to a directory on your local machine
