2021-10-25 Week 8
Summary
- Introduction to HDF Files
- Discussion 8
Overview and Reflection
We began our discussion of HDF files. This was my first introduction to HDF files, and I am still getting familiar with it. Completing the sandbox challenge will probably give me an opportunity to work with the file. I have been a little behind with the quizzes, and I plan on getting a lot of them done this weekend.

Summary
- Discussion 8
Overview and Reflection
I enjoyed this discussion. Examining the various issues in the field of data science and researching its current state was interesting and I felt like I've learned a lot. My group focused on velocity, and I was not aware that the state of the art services are actually not very efficient/fast.

Summary
- Sparse Data Challenge
Overview and Reflection
The sparse data challenge was an interesting experience. My partner and I first tried to look for existing methods of filling in missing data and use that, given the time limitations. However, after doing a little bit of research, we figured that there wasn't an appropriate implementation online. We began coding a script that would do perform the necessary task, but did not get to finish it. I wish we could have had more time, since I thought the method that my partner came up with (and the code) was very effective.

Summary
- Quiz 4
- Quiz 5
- Sandbox 2
Overview and Reflection
I was able to complete Sandbox 2 with a lot of help from the sources that Professor Davis posted. I initially had a lot of trouble conceptualizing how I was going to pull the coordinates, but I eventually was able to figure everything out with the help of those sources. It felt very satisfying being able to visualize the final product of the assignment on a map.

Summary
- Utility Script
- Podcast
- Sandbox 3
- Discussion 5
Overview and Reflection
I was very behind with uploading my utility script and podcast, but I have them up now. I borrowed from one of the first scripts I've ever written and changed a couple things. I enjoyed looking through everyone else's scripts and testing them out myself.

Overview and Reflection
I was only able to attend one class this week. The in-class activity on Monday was very interesting and allowed me to think more in depth about the current state of data availability.

2021-09-13 Week 2
Summary
- Finished sandbox challenge 1
- Practiced using Git
- Completed Quiz 3
- Created the About the Coder page
Overview and Reflection
I feel like I've gotten more familiar with using Git and the general workflow. I've completed sandbox 1 without having to go on the webpage and manually editing through the website, and it was a good learning experience. I'm looking forward to becoming more familiar with it in the future as we spend more time with it in class.
2021-09-06 Week 1
Summary
- Created this work report wiki and began documenting tasks
- Read Tenen & Wythoff (2014) and Lowndes et. al. (2017)
- First in-person discussion
- Completed Quiz 2
Overview and Reflection
The reading on sustainable authorship was very interesting. I've always hated using Microsoft Office due to its unnecessary complexity and (sometimes) poor compatibility across platforms. I first came across Markdown with Reddit, and began to appreciate it ever since. I remember writing a paper for the first time in college using LaTeX and loving the way it looked and the control I had over its formatting. I definitely agree with the sentiment that sustainable authorship is something that is necessary, especially in an age where things become obsolete very quickly.

Summary
- Got more familiar with Git and Github
- Joined the F21 developers team on Github and the Slack team
- Read Goldsberry (2013)
- Completed Quiz 1
Overview and Reflection
We went through the syllabus and began getting acclimated to using git in a local environment with command lines. It's still very new to me as I've only used Github in an online setting, and it is probably going to take a while for me to get used to it.
