Week 15

Summary

  • Presented the summary of the final project
  • Finished the write up for the final project

Overview

  1. Created a simple slides for the final project that has a brief summary of my research and the research methods I've used.
  2. Wrote a more in-depth paper on my final paper. Since my project was not finished at the day of the presentation, the writings have more information.
  3. Wrote an instruction on how to replicate the research result I have achieved.

Upcoming

  • Present a short summary on the presentation.
  • Finish writing the research paper.
  • Finish writing the instruction to replicate the research.

Week 11

Summary

  • Learned the basics of QGIS
  • Submitted the proposal for the final project

Overview

  1. After the professor Dan has taken over the class, we learned the basics of QGIS and simple geospatial analysis methods, such as zonal statistics.
  2. Researched datasets that are available on the internet, and came up with a research questions for the final project.

Upcoming

  • Search datasets available on the internet.
  • Develop a research proposal appropriate for the class.

Week 3

Summary

  • Drafted "About Coder" page
  • Responded to Discussion 1 and Discussion 2
  • Finished Sandbox 1

Overview

  1. Wrote few sentences about myself and a list of things that I like. I also included a gif of Thumper from Bambi.
  2. Finally posted to GitHub Discussions for Discussion 1 and Discussion 2. Should try to stay time efficient.
  3. Updated the CONTRIBUTORS.txt file and created a new Python file to do option A for the Sandbox.

Upcoming

  • Write utility script
  • Record short podcast explaining the utility script

Response: What is utility?

Week 2

Summary

  • Read assigned readings for 9/6 and 9/9
  • In-Class Discussion
  • Drafted response for Discussion 1
  • Finished Quiz 2

Overview

  1. Read Tenen & Wythoff article about Markdown and Lowndes et al. about open data tools. Tenan & Wythoff talked how markdown is a sustainable form of writing-it is universal regardless of your PC's OS or software availability. Lowndes shows how his team has achieved efficient time management for their research using open data tools such as R and GitHub. Need to revisit when writing the response to Discussion 1.
  2. In-class discussion happened for Discussion 2. I'm bad at in-class discussions, but I talked few words about sustainable data format. I should still post a response to the GitHub Discussion page.
  3. I drafted my response for Discussion 1, but have not completed.
  4. Finished Quiz 2 for the first attempt. Need to read the readings carefully as the questions are highly related to the assigned readings.

Upcoming

  • Response to Discussion 2
  • Finish to Sandbox 1
  • Draft "About Coder" page

Response: What is Spatial?

Spatial is something related to space. It is not limited to geographical location or the natural environment. Some other examples include players' shooting spot on the basketball court or the character's location in a Nintendo game. The place of an artist's brush stroke may also be something spatial. Spatial thinking allows people to analyze the data in a different perspective. I would like to apply spatial thinking to the health data I'm working with.

Week 1

Summary

  • Join GitHub repositories
  • Read assigned readings for 9/1
  • Finished Quiz 1

Overview

  1. I joined the two GitHub repositories for the class as well as the Slack channel.
  2. Read Goldsberry article about spatial thinking, spatial data, and visual analyzation. It highlighted the importance of spatial thinking and argued that high school and college should bring back geography and geospatial analysis to their curriculum. Need to revisit when writing the response to Discussion 1.
  3. Attempted quiz multiple times until I get a satisfiable grade. Since the questions change, it might be nice to take the quiz for few times even after getting a satisfiable grade.

Upcoming

  • Response to Discussion 1
