-
Posted Discussion 5
Posted the model from last week's group exercise.
-
QGIS
QGIS was easy to download-- although I accidentally downloaded like two versions. I downloaded the stand alone then the one mentioned in the class repository.
It was easy to follow up how to use QGIS in class, take notes, then work on my ASCI file on my own inserting it into the map. However I would have been completely lost without the in-class demonstration.
-
ASCI file
Creating my ASCI file, I tried to make it a little fun by attempting to spell out "HI". It did not come out bad! Even though I generated random numbers, I did put some thought into how far in the map it should show up. I think it showed up in a good spot. When I demonstrated on the QGIS map, at first the Hi did not print very well because of the colors gradient (it was basically printed in white text, which was hard to see. However, once I changed the gradient from "white to black" to "black to white" it showed up and was easy to see!

Week 3
Summary of Work
- Class Zoom
- Utility Script
- Podcast
- Updated "About" Page
- Discussion 3
- Quiz 3
Overview of Tasks
-
Class Zoom
Attended class through zoom ! It was weird to be back on zoom after going back in-person, but all went very well.
-
Utility Script
I used one of the first scripts I ever wrote for a class, so it was pretty simple. But I found it more "utilizable" than more complex codes I wrote-- even if in a very simple sense. The code just puts unique words in a word bank, which is something I found very helpful when I was learning English for the first time.
-
Podcast
Recorded a short podcast about my utility script. I thought this would take longer, but after I wrote down the points I wanted to say, it was pretty easy to record.
-
Updated "About" Page
I updated the "about" Rmd page with my new script, as well as with a link to my script. I also fixed my avatar image link, as it wasn't showing up the first time. Now I want to make it smaller..
-
Discussion 3
I did discussion 3 by submitting my podcast as well as listening to some others and trying the scripts. I responded to the four questions.
-
Quiz 3
Did quiz 3! I continue to get a better sense of how quizzes accumulate. I --sadly-- did not get a perfect score on my first try this time. I re-did the quiz one more time but I still got one question wrong. I'll try to get all questions right before attempting Quiz 4 next week.

Week 2
Summary of Work
- Went to class
- Organized notes
- Did Readings
- Did Quiz 2
- Practiced Git
- "about" page draft
Overview of Tasks
-
Went to class
Went to class Monday and Wednesday. I think our first discussion in a group went very well. I loved how we sat in a circle and there was a discussion going on. As for me, it takes me a little bit to warm up and start to participate. So hopefully next time!!
-
Organized notes
I created a notebook in OneNote for the class and started typing notes there. This helped me while drafting the "about" page, as I was able to go back to things we talked about in class.
-
Did Readings
I did the readings. They were lengthier than the first week, but very helpful. I am yet to post in the discussion board though.
-
Did Quiz 2
Did quiz 2 and got a better sense of how the quizzes add up to each other. There were a few questions from last quiz, and some new ones. According to blackboard it only took me 6 minutes-- which is great since I did very well on the first try. Hoping I keep doing well in the quizzes!
-
Practiced Git
Practiced Git on my command line a bit by applying a few things that we talked about in class. I also did so through github desktop. I think I'm more inclined to github desktop but will know for sure with time.
-
"about" page draft
Created an Rmd file which included my name, date, semester, avatar and a list -- I chose to write a list of things that bring me peace. I don't know how to preview how the file would look like in the website though, which I was curious to see. I especially wanted to see if my avatar would show up and if it would look alright.

- Worked on Sandbox
- Quiz 1
Overview of Tasks
-
Went to class
This was my first class in the Fall 2021 semester— felt good to be back in-person. Room was easy to find, and I liked that it was a small class.
-
Read syllabus
Went over syllabus a little over class, but read it better after. It was lengthy but very clear.
-
Downloaded Git
It took me a minute to realize that Git and Github weren't the same thing. I also thought we were supposed to know what Git was, so I googled about it a little and asked a friend for help.
-
Joined Slack
I love that there is a Slack channel! I was quick to join and I know it will be helpful (already got a question answered there.)
-
Read article and wrote discussion post
I loved that the article was so short yet so informative, it was a quick, easy read. I was a little unsure whether we had to reply to all three prompts or just one, but I noticed someone had already participated in the discussion and answered all three. I enjoyed typing a reply and thinking about this!
-
Worked on Sandbox
I actually though the sandbox was meant to be done before Monday, because I thought the "activities" for Monday on the schedule were meant to be done before, not on the day of. So I got the sandbox done early! It wasn't hard, nor did it take much time, but I only did option A.
-
Quiz 1
Quiz 1 was good and relatively easy. I got a 100. However, I admit, I did google the Git question as we hadn't talked about it in class yet
