Visions and values

Be friendly and generous as well as smart.

You're obviously very smart, but being friendly and generous to other members really engenders a good group atmosphere.

Communication is key.

Please try and stay as visible and engaged as possible (in person or remote is totally fine) while working.

Make your work accessible.

Choose open-access journals; get on Twitter and write accessible summaries of your findings.

Talk about your research.

We work in public health. The outcomes of our research should be understandable to the general public. Get your research used. This is as important as writing papers. Talk to the public and say yes to media opportunities.

Choose open-source.

There is always a free alternative. Contribute to an existing package rather than creating your own. Contributions to open-source software are also a great way of improving coding.

Reproducible science.

Where possible, work in the open on GitHub. Make sure everyone can use your code. This is another way of getting your research used.
