Suitable Radio cases - smx06/DIYorange GitHub Wiki
Some useful cases:
I.
Loud (really loud) speaker:
Ornge-pi (pc or smaller ones) can easily be mounted on the back side,
just don't forget to shift the ornge-pi, so the power and audio jack connectors fit.
Then fix orng-pi with screws (drilling holes in the back side)
Dismount back-side USB-socket so orng-pi power cord and audio cord go through this hole.
Dismounted USB-socket will be used inside the case to power on the speaker itself by USB cable
connected to ornge-pi Usb.
Close the case, plug audio to the front audio-jack socket,
plug the orng-pi power (2A! see the adapters&cords section) and all works & looks like this:
can be obtained here (or nearby sellers), but now the price isn't so good (i did buy it for 5usd, so it was more interesting) https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Classic-electronic-myamp-after-engraving-high-bass-guitar-amplifier-adjustable-portable-speaker-mini-my-amp/32254822725.html?spm=2114.01010208.3.2.aN2fzf&ws_ab_test=searchweb201556_10,searchweb201602_3_10048_10047_10065_10046_9986_10045_10017_107_10060_414_10061_10062_10057_10056_10037_10055_10054_301_10033_10059_10032_10058_10052_10053_10050_10051,searchweb201603_7&btsid=a67768d2-d5bd-4290-9f58-60f5c726bc2a
II.
Full radio (FM)
There are a lot of pretty Radios (including retro ones) Most have huge empty space inside or even a big batteries space. So you can mount anything there. Just verify there is a AUX/line-in slot (to connect orng-pi audio) better if AUX connector is dismountable (to put orng-pi audio cord inside the case and left nothing outside)
There are a few of power choices:
- if radio uses 5V DC adapter then just split it between radio & orng-pi, easiest choice
- many radios use 9V DC with external power adapter (~0.8 - 1.2 A) (this will be not so comfortable cause orng-pi uses 5V DC / 2A but you can power it directly from orng-pi Usb with some voltage-Up converter like this: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/DC-DC-Mobile-Power-USB-DC-5V-to-9V-WIFI-Router-modem-Ethernet-Switch-Solar-Charger/32237416525.html?spm=2114.13010608.0.75.ESi6a2 )
- some use 220/110V which is converted inside the Radio case (to 12V AC or somth)
such is easier to handle: just split 220V cord inside the radio with 2nd cord going to orng-pi
adapter 220V AC->5V DC - see adapters section)
it can look like this:
The hard part will be the power switch for orng-pi (On/Off), cause main FM Radio on/off button will not switch Off your orng-pi, so if you don't want to make orng-pi work instantly (dont know how much power it consumes but guess not so notable, but..), plugging and unplugging via the cord itself is not very comfortable. So you need to embed some switch like this to turn Off orng-pi: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/New-USB-Cable-With-ON-OFF-Switch-Toggle-Power-Control-For-Arduino-Raspberry-Pi/32655317937.html?spm=2114.13010608.0.59.ESi6a2 or use USB/power cord with similar switch like this: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/New-Banana-Pi-M2-USB-Switch-Cable-USB-Wire-To-DC-Port-Charging-Switch-Cable-For/32521915580.html?spm=2114.13010608.0.130.Fmw7B7
and the hardest will be to make this switch look Ok on your back panel (if you care),
it can be something like this (after working with fretsaw or candent knife):
So the final result could look like brand new Radio (which plays both FM and WiFi!), aux will switch it to your orng-pi Internet rdio:
III.
"iCase" :-)
The simplistic case (without built-in loud speaker , so you need to connect any external one to play)
But the price is just 0.5 usd!
Looks ok for me (the real blue color is much more attractive then on screen):
The secret: this is just electric wall mount panel!
IV.
Etc.
Also you can use any other suitable case you want (with line in):
