These guidelines focus on description of the backlog of born-digital content recovered from physical computer media during the Computer Media Preservation Project. For information on describing new digital accessions see the general description guidelines for born-digital content.
Background
The Special Collections Computer Media Preservation Project began in 2016. Computer media was copied in-house (hard drives, flash drives, floppy disks, data CDs and DVDs) and some older media formats were outsourced to data recovery specialists. The majority of the media came from the Sophia Smith Collection, and much smaller amounts were from the College Archives and Mortimer Rare Book Collection. Audiovisual media (including audio CDs and video DVDs) was not within the scope of the project.
Recovered digital files have been backed up to the Libraries' preservation storage server, and digital file lists and documentation were stored with the digital assets.
Project Goal
The goal of this project is to increase discoverability and access of born-digital content in Special Collections by creating baseline description in ArchivesSpace resource records. Due to the number of records to be updated, and large amount of digital content, for the most part, it will be described at an aggregate level.
Project Scope
The project does _not _address updating accession records, only resource records.
The following types of digital content are not included in this project. They are addressed in separate guidelines or projects:
