Academic institutions have responded to increased demand for skilled bioinformaticians by supporting interdisciplinary training in several ways. Many colleges and universities now offer undergraduate- and graduate-level certificates and degrees in bioinformatics and related fields. Interestingly, academic institutions are also developing classroom and online training courses that are specifically tailored for individuals who lack a computational background yet wish to become just fluent enough to perform bioinformatics tasks. . Moreover, learning advanced and analytical skills often needed in research environments, could open doors to various national and international post-graduate degrees, that will train the new generation of molecular scientist (for a country that desperately needs to upgrade and renew the current academic and scientific environment). Also, it could be a tool for researchers and their students for contributing to worldly scientific endeavors in “-omics” sciences, and more importantly, knowledge acquired through these classes could focus on solving national necessities (for instance those related to neglected tropical diseases, or local genetic anomalies), ameliorating the lives of their fellow citizens. Finally, it could be used to develop similar locally developed cloud-based web-services geared to the specific needs of local scientists.
