Wikipedia says:

A hackerspace or hackspace is a location where people with common interests, often in computers, technology, science, or digital or electronic art can meet, socialise and/or collaborate. Hackerspaces can be viewed as open community labs incorporating elements of machine shops, workshops and/or studios where hackers can come together to share resources and knowledge to build and make things.

In other words a hackerspace is a place where people meet that want to build something. Not to break. If you thought a hacker would be somebody breaking into systems, stealing data or doing other illegal things, you’re wrong. These guys are called crackers, so hackers are the good ones whose intention is to understand and build things.
