Introduction - sitcomlab/IPED-Toolkit GitHub Wiki
Public displays are a popular means of communication nowadays. They are commonly used as an information outlet at traffic hubs, shopping malls, or public places in general. They feature some key advantages in comparison to other media types. For example, they are more flexible and more up-to-date than paper based approaches and they usually have bigger screens than personal devices. Additionally, they are visually prominent, provide broad accessibility, and are situated in a certain context.
Based on an analysis of existing prototyping and evaluation methods for public display systems, we propose a new approach integrating panoramic imagery and a lightweight, graph-based model for augmenting the footage. We introduce the Immersive Public Display Evaluation and Design (IPED) Toolkit as a concrete implementation. It allows to engineer public display systems based on realistic audiovisual simulations and a state-transition graph. Key benefits include high reusability of simulated environments, reduced effort to "construct" deployment sites and scenarios, as well as support for a broad range of prototypes and design and evaluation methods.
