How to use SSP on macOS
This tutorial will go over the process of using Homebrew and Wineskin-Server to install SSP on macOS versions 12 - 14 (may also apply to 10.15 - 11)
1. Download Homebrew
- this will be used to download and install wineskin-server itself
- you will need to copy the line of code into a terminal window.
- you may need to enter your password (possibly more than once) in order to complete the installation.
2. Download Wineskin-Server
- this is what will allow SSP to run on your Mac. unlike the earlier version of wineskin, this version maintains compatability with later versions of macOS (catalina, big sur, monterey, ventura, sonoma/10.15 - 14)
- copy the line under "install the new version" and paste into the terminal window to download and install wineskin-server.
- you may need to enter your password again in order to complete the installation.
3. Create a Wrapper
- open wineskin winery and update wrapper version as needed.
- click on the dropdown to select an engine, then click "download and install" (i'd recommend WS11Wine64Bit9.3 or WS12WineCX64Bit23.7.1-2)
- click "create new wrapper" (optional: rename your wrapper to something easy to remember. for this demonstration, my wrapper is named 'ws_ssp')
- it may take a while for the wrapper to be created.
- once the wrapper has been created, click "view wrapper in finder"
4. Install Fonts
- you may need to install a japanese font for the text to display properly.
- open the wrapper application and click on the "winetricks" button
- click on the "fonts" dropdown menu, scroll down to the package named "fakejapanese", select one, and click "run"
- click "yes" on the popup. afterwards, click close on the window
- once the package is done installing, you are ready to proceed with downloading and installing SSP
5. Download SSP
- https://ssp.shillest.net/
- click on "complete install package" to download the complete installer (not the zip package)
6. Install SSP through the Wineskin Wrapper
- go back to the wrapper window and click "install software"
- on the installer window, click the "choose setup executable" button
- navigate to the ssp installer (should still be in the downloads folder)
- use the installer prompt to choose a folder to install SSP in (note: i'd recommend creating a new folder in the "program files" folder in the "c:" drive)
7. Test the Software
- the wineskin wrapper might not be able to locate the ssp executable. open "advanced options" and choose the loacation
- click "test run" to make sure everything runs properly
- if successful, the default ghost should show on your screen (Emily 4.5) along with the SSP Preferences window
- enter your information in the ssp preferences popup window (this info may be used by certain ghosts)
8. Install a Ghost
- for first-time users, i'd recommend installing SSP Angel
- click on the download button to go to the github page
- click on the .nar link (top link at the bottom of the page) to download
- drag and drop the downloaded file to the ghost on screen to install
- right-click on the ghost, mouse over the "change ghost" option, and click on "SSP Angel"
- repeat these steps for any other ghost you want to install (also works on shells, balloons, etc.)
Once you have the ghost installed, close the program to complete the test. Save your wineskin wrapper to the dock by searching for it in the finder and dragging it to the dock.
Notes:
- Baseware features should work (updates, hotkeys, collisions, etc.) but ghost-specific features may not (window detection, saori/plugin-specific functions, os information)
