Gensokyo chronicals

Gensokyo (幻想郷, literally "Land of Illusions" or "Land of Fantasy", more accurately romanized as Gensōkyō or Gensoukyou) is the fictional land that the entire Touhou series takes place in. Its culture vaguely resembles that of feudal Japan, with a lot of folktale elements added on. Gensokyo was originally a desolate, haunted region of Japan. The youkai that lived there began to terrorize the surrounding lands, and thus powerful, heroic humans were sent to exorcise and exterminate them. The off and on battle between humans and youkai continued on until 1884 A.D., when Gensokyo was sealed off from this increasingly scientific and skeptical world with the creation of the Hakurei Border. There has been little contact between those societies ever since. Today, the only known gateway between Gensokyo and this world is the Hakurei Shrine, which stands in isolation along the border on distant mountains of the far east.

Gensokyo is populated mainly by youkai, but a decent human and rabbit population lives there as well. Some of its inhabitants went there to hide, to escape, to find shelter when no one and nowhere else would accept them. Many of them just like the natural darkness.

Gensokyo Landmarks

Eientei

(永遠亭, literally House of Eternity) is the name of a large, old-fashioned Japanese mansion hidden deep within the Bamboo Forest of the Lost. It has hallways that lead out into the far reaches of the sky. Eientei is currently occupied by a large group. Kaguya Houraisan and Eirin Yagokoro have been hiding there since their exile from the Moon. Other occupants include rabbits—lots of them—all under the command of Tewi Inaba and Reisen Udongein Inaba, who protect Kaguya and Eirin from intruders.

Every month on the night of the full moon, the residents of Eientei hold a Moon Festival (例月祭, Reigetsusai) offering mochi with medicinal herbs pounded into them. Making mochi is thus the main occupation of the Earth rabbits.

The Hakurei Shrine:

(博麗神社, Hakurei Jinja) is a small, run-down Shinto shrine (神社) that lies in the mountains of the East, isolated from society. It exists on the boundary between this world and Gensokyo. It is simultaneously accessible from both sides, but some unknown circumstances must be met in order to travel from one side to the other. The shrine is home to Reimu Hakurei. It's also apparently a popular hangout for all the other girls who Reimu and company defeat in the course of the Touhou games. Behind the shrine is a grove of cherry trees, which is a popular spot for flower viewing in spring.

The Scarlet Devil Mansion

(紅魔館, Koumakan lit. "Scarlet Mansion" or "Scarlet Manor") is the Scarlet family's fancy European-style mansion. It is located on a ridge at the edge Misty Lake. It has relatively few windows for a building its size, which is a beneficial feature, considering the nature of its main tenants, Remilia and Flandre Scarlet (they happen to be vampires). In addition to the vampire sisters, the mansion also houses a large staff working under the Scarlet name. The most powerful staff members are Hong Meiling, who leads the outer guard; Patchouli Knowledge who acts as the librarian and private tutor; and Sakuya Izayoi, who is the maids' leader and acts as Remilia's personal attendant. The inside of Scarlet Devil Mansion is much larger than is apparent from the outside. This is due to Sakuya's ability to manipulate time and space.

Hakurei Border

(Hakurei Dai-Kekkai, lit. Hakurei Great Border, 博麗大結界) is the border between Gensokyo and the outside world. This was created in Meiji 17 (AD 1884), the creation of which marks year 0 on Gensokyo's Timeline. It's often refered to as the "Border," "Hakurei Barrier," "Great Boundary," etc. It is known that the Hakurei Shrine is located on the border and believed that Yukari Yakumo lives somewhere along the border as well (though not near the shrine). It is the strongest boundary in all of Gensokyo, with Youkai reinforcing the original work done by humans in 1884. Yuyuko has speculated that not even Yukari could make a boundary of this level (from scratch, on her own). Yet it is not completely impenetrable. Examples of this include various individual people (Reisen, Chiyuri, Yumemi, Maribel, Sanae, Kanako, Suwako, and many others) that have arrived through it as well as entire locations (Moriya Shrine, Poltergeist Mansion, Scarlet Devil Mansion) that have been transported through the barrier.
