Primary works

The oldest and canonical work is Piṅgala's Chandaḥśāstra. It is written in sūtra style; later works are in verse and condense some parts of it and expand others.

Some more works that apparently deal with metre:

  • Chapters 14, 15, 32 of Bharata's Nāṭyaśāstra
  • Chapters 328–335 of Agni-purāṇa
The main four works of the classical period:
  1. Śrutabodha attributed to Kālidāsa (2nd century CE?)
  2. Suvṛttatilaka of Kṣemendra (11th century)
  3. Chandomañjarī of Gaṅgādāsa (12th century)
  4. Vṛttaratnākara of Kedārabhaṭṭa (15th century)
