# What is BMI [Body Mass Index]?

The body mass index (BMI) is a measurement based on a person's mass (weight) and height. The BMI is calculated by dividing the body weight by the square of the height, and it is expressed in kilogrammes per square metre (kg/m2) since weight is measured in kilogrammes and height is measured in metres.

For Adults above 20 years old, BMI falls into one of the following categories:-

The BMI ranges are based on the connection between adiposity and disease and mortality caused by excessive body fat. The use of BMI as a disease risk factor has shown that various diseases are more likely to develop when BMI rises. Premature death, cardiovascular illnesses, high blood pressure, osteoarthritis, certain malignancies, and diabetes are a few ailments linked to being overweight or obese.

BMI is the most widely used metric to link the risk of health issues with weight at the population level since it is so simple to measure and calculate. Adolphe Quetelet created it in the nineteenth century. Researchers found that BMI seems to be a fair proxy for issues connected to obesity and being overweight in the 1970s, particularly based on the data and report from the Seven Countries study.

Like any measurement, it is not perfect because it only considers height and weight and ignores the various levels of adiposity based on age, amount of physical activity, and sex. Because of this, it is expected that it will sometimes overstate and other times underestimate adiposity.
