Accumulator Box Project Description

Responsible Engineers

Zainab Vajahath & Isabel Trujillo

High Level Project Objective

To design the accumulator on the electrical side to fit within the mechanical constraints (given by mechanical accumulator box design group).

Purpose of the Project

The accumulator is the source of energy for the vehicle, and its design must be rigorously conformal to FSAE specifications.

Deliverables

  • Detailed summary of rules pertaining to Accumulator box (2019 rules)
  • Create a list of what is going in the accumulator (BMS,IMD,Thermistor_expan, cells, etc.)
  • Once the list is created talk to (mechanical accumulator box group) about feasibility of fitting everything in
  • Using Solidworks, develop a model of what the accumulator will look like with everything in it (BMS, IMD, Cells and their modules, etc.) [Ask mechanical group about whether they are wanting to do this or if they want you guys to do this - presents a good CAD practice opportunity]
  • This model will take long, when doing this keep all the rules in mind and place each component as if it were adhering to all rules (if you need CAD help ask Chris - he is a wizard at CAD)
  • Figure out how the cell stacks (1s5p for instance) will hook up, what type of cable, battery lugs, and insulation type.
  • Choose an appropriate cell level fuse (Are we using cell level fuses - make a case as to why or why not)
  • Design maintenance plug (this is a glorified way of saying some sort of switch that disengages the tractive system when opened - allows one to work safely). For example, watch this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEOR8V2wJn0
  • Note the secondary positive locking (https://www.google.ca/search?q=positive+locking+system&rlz=1C1CHBF_en-GBCA742CA742&oq=positive+locking+system&aqs=chrome.0.0j69i57.11995j1j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8) mechanism
  • A maintenance plug (service plug) is needed in between each module as required by the rules. What we consider a module is something that is equal to or less than 120VDC, and less than 6MJ of energy.
