- Atomicity
- Visibility
- Ordering
[Instruction reordering] means the order in which instructions are executed can differ from the order they appear in your source code.
There are two main types of reordering:
- Compiler Reordering - The compiler rearranges instructions as part of the code generation process to produce faster machine code.
- CPU Reordering (Out-of-Order Execution) — CPUs execute instructions out of their original order internally to better utilize available execution units and reduce pipeline stalls.
Memory visibility refers to when and how a change made by one thread becomes visible to other threads.
/java/ When a variable is marked as volatile, the Java Memory Model guarantees the following:
- The variable is always read from and written to main memory.
- When one thread updates the variable, other threads immediately see the change.
- Memory barriers ensure that operations before the volatile write are completed first, preventing instruction reordering.
