Self-Sustaining Dome

This milestone focuses on creating the first dome, bringing in colonists, and maintaining basic needs without constant resupply from Earth.

Tasks

  1. Construct the First Dome

    • Purpose: Provide a safe, pressurized habitat for humans on Mars.
    • Requirements: Sufficient power, water, and oxygen lines connected. Adequate building materials (concrete, metals, polymers).
    • Contribution: Unlocks the ability to house colonists and start local food production.
  2. Establish Food Production

    • Purpose: Secure a consistent food supply to avoid starvation or heavy reliance on supply rockets.
    • Requirements: Build a farm or hydroponic farm inside the dome (or rely on external greenhouse modules, if available).
    • Contribution: Moves the colony toward self-sufficiency, reducing Earth cargo costs.
  3. Bring in First Colonists

    • Purpose: Populate your dome with specialists who can work in factories, research labs, etc.
    • Requirements: Launch a passenger rocket with a balanced crew (e.g., scientists, engineers, medics).
    • Contribution: Kickstarts the human element of your colony, raising production and research capabilities.
  4. Provide Dome Services (Medical, Recreation)

    • Purpose: Keep colonists healthy and happy, preventing mental breakdowns or losses.
    • Requirements: Build a small infirmary, diner, grocer, and possibly a relaxation area.
    • Contribution: Maintains morale and productivity, ensuring colonists can function effectively.
  5. Maintain Life Support and Resource Flow

    • Purpose: Monitor power consumption, oxygen production, water usage, and stockpiles.
    • Requirements: Consistent upkeep of infrastructure. Possibly build backup systems (batteries, water towers, oxygen tanks).
    • Contribution: Minimizes colony downtime. A stable environment helps you plan the next expansion phase confidently.

How This Milestone Contributes to the Overall Project

  • Human Factor: Introduces colonists, unlocking research, manufacturing, and growth.
  • Self-Sufficiency: Solidifies a reliable food and service base, freeing up resources to focus on colony expansion and innovation.
