SeaDAS 10.0.0 Released β€” Enhanced Tools for PACE and Earthdata Cloud Integration

November 2025 β€” NASA’s Ocean Biology Processing Group (OBPG) has released SeaDAS 10.0.0, the next major update to NASA’s open-source software suite for processing, visualizing, and analyzing ocean color and other Earth-science remote-sensing data.

SeaDAS 10 introduces broad enhancements across functionality, performance, and mission support, with a particular focus on the PACE mission and integration with Earthdata Cloud services.

Key Highlights

  • Expanded PACE Support – Now compatible with the latest PACE OCI, SPEXone, and HARP2 Level-2 file formats.
  • New Metadata Dump Tool – Provides a complete ncdump-style textual view for convenient access to all file metadata, including global attributes and groups.
  • Improved Visualization Tools – Major updates to Spectrum View, Angular View, Bathymetry, Land Mask, and OB_CLOUD Browser tools, offering smoother performance and improved stability.
  • New General Preferences Interface – Centralized control of NASA OB.DAAC reader options, including flip direction, valid-pixel expressions, and band grouping.
  • Installer Enhancements – Streamlined installers are now available for Windows, Linux, and Apple Silicon macOS. This release also introduces non-JRE installers, which use an existing system Java 21 installation and provide added flexibility for users who manage their own environments.
  • SNAP 12 and Java 21 – Upgraded for improved stability, performance, and long-term compatibility.

Additional Improvements

  • OB_CLOUD Browser – Added user-region and location selectors, new help page, and improved responsiveness for slow networks.
  • Science Processor GUIs – Fixed multiple interface bugs and added support for the new L1bextract OCI processor.
  • General Tools – Enhanced progress monitoring, added new color schemes for PACE products, and reduced freeze events in several visualization modules.
  • Deprecation Notice – Intel-based macOS is no longer supported. SeaDAS 9.2.0 was the final version for that platform.

Known Limitations

  • The Time Series Tool is currently unavailable due to SNAP 12 integration changes and may be restored in a future release.
  • On macOS systems using OCSSW V2025.2 or later, SeaDAS must be launched from the command line to run the science processors successfully.
