This is an example of a till keyboard:
There are several different types of key:
- Users: the four yellow keys "Alice", "Bob", "Charlie", "Doris" in the top-left corner. Pressing one of these switches to the appropriate user page. (In most till setups, users will be given their own token, for example a NFC wristband, to switch to their page.)
- Functions: the green keys at the left. These usually cause an action when pressed.
- Clear: the red key at the bottom-left. Used to clear erroneous input, dismiss popup windows, and so on. Pressing Clear never deletes anything from the till; the "Cancel" function is used for that.
- Cursor keys: the white keys with arrows. Move the selection or the cursor, as appropriate.
- Number keys: used to enter numbers. The "00" key is the same as pressing the "0" key twice.
- Lock: locks the screen until a user key or token is used. Usually the screen locks automatically after a transaction is completed; this key can be used to lock it explicitly in the middle of a transaction. One press usually changes the prompt from "Ready" to "Locked"; two presses switches to a blank "Locked" screen.
- Tenders: the yellow keys at the bottom-right. Used to tell the till about payments in cash or by card. Some tills may have different tender keys on their keyboard, for example if they don't support card payments but do support Bitcoin. If you need to tell the till about a payment but there isn't an explicit key for it, the payments menu can be accessed by pressing the "Manage Trans" function key and choosing option 6.
- Departments: the blue keys to the left of the number keys.
- Quantity: used to sell more than one of the same item at a time.
- Modifiers: on this keyboard the "4pt Jug" and "Double" buttons are modifiers. Press one of these before a line key to alter what the line key sells.
- Line keys: all the blank keys on the keyboard are "line" keys that can be assigned to stock lines, price lookups or modifiers. Multiple stocklines, price lookups and modifiers can be assigned to a single key; if there's more than one then pressing the key brings up a menu so you can choose one.
