Casa de Fruita was founded a century ago when the Zanger Family began planting orchards in the Pacheco Pass area. This was a 15-mile trade route between the Bay Area and San Joaquin Valley that had originally been established by Native Americans. During the 1940s the family opened a fruit stand on the side of the road, which has grown into the modern day tourist attraction.
They eventually turned their hand to winemaking, producing a variety of wines from both grapes and other fruits. In the early 1980s they petitioned for appellation status, and in 1984 the Pacheco Pass AVA was established. Zanger remains the only winery in the AVA.
In addition to the traditional wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel and Chardonnay they make a variety of other wines, including a Sparkling Muscat, Mead and Fruit wines. The wines are regarded as little more than a curiosity; souvenirs for tourists.
