History
Michael and Lois Sones met on a cruise ship in the mid-1980s, discovering their mutual admiration and enjoyment of wine. Michael studied Fermentation Science at UC Davis, and the couple found their home in Santa Cruz.
2003: Founded Sones Cellars, a family-run urban winery on Santa Cruz's Westside.
The winery operates from a hip industrial center on Ingalls Street, focusing on small-lot, fine quality wines with minimal intervention winemaking.
Philosophy
Sources grapes from organic vineyards or SIP (Sustainability in Practice) certified locations. Reuses bottles when possible and recycles natural corks at the winery.
Wines
Focus on Petite Sirah and Zinfandel, two distinctively Californian varietals, from Central California vineyards. Also explores other grape varieties suited to the local environment.
