The Pellier brothers are credited with introducing a large assortment of French and other European varieties into the Santa Clara Valley in 1854. Their import program seeded later plantings throughout the region and their family lineage was transmitted to the Mirassou family through marriage, creating one of the most important multi-generational wine families in California.
1854: Louis and Pierre Pellier imported a large assortment of French and other European grape varieties to their vineyards in the San Jose/Evergreen area. This represented one of the first major importations of fine European vinifera varieties to the Santa Clara Valley, significantly expanding beyond the Mission grapes that had dominated California viticulture since the mission era.
Family Marriage: Henriette Pellier married Pierre Mirassou, transmitting the Pellier viticultural knowledge and rootstock to what would become the Mirassou wine dynasty.
Legacy: The Pellier importations seeded vineyards throughout the Santa Clara Valley. Many later commercial wineries traced their vine material back to Pellier cuttings.
The Pellier family represents a critical germplasm and family lineage source for Santa Clara Valley wine history. While Almaden (founded 1852) is often credited with the first commercial planting of fine European grapes in the county, the Pellier brothers' 1854 importations dramatically expanded the genetic diversity and quality potential of the valley's vineyards.
The Pellier-Mirassou family connection created one of California's longest-running wine dynasties, with Mirassou family operations continuing into the 21st century.
