Dan Wheeler purchased 73.5 acres of land near Soquel in 1952 and bonded his winery in 1955. The wines were sold under the "Wines by Wheeler" label. His caves are believed to be the first to be dug for winemaking in California following Repeal; he dug them by hand with a pick and shovel and a small amount of "black powder".
In 1977 he purchased vineyard land in Lake County with the intention of moving his production facilities there. Nicasio was active in Soquel into the mid 1990s.
