Originally purchased in 1955 as an 18-acre orchard, the Arata family planted a vineyard after a disastrous frost in 1972 wiped out the trees. For years the fruit was sold to other wineries in the area and the family produced jug wine under the ARATAlabel. By the late 1990s all that remained of the original vineyard was 1.25 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon.

In 1995 the Arata family entered into a custom-crush agreement with Tom Leonardini, owner of Whitehall Lane in Napa Valley. The wine was produced intermittently for a few years and was well received, with the 1997 vintage receiving 92 points from Wine Spectator. In October 2007 Wine Spectator again awarded the 2004 vintage 92 points. The wine is available exclusively from Napa Valley Winery Exchangein San Francisco.
