John Gemello

John Gemello was an Italian immigrant vintner who worked for Paul Masson before co-founding Gemello Winery in Mountain View in 1933. He represents the Italian-American winemaking generation that bridged from the pioneer era to post-Prohibition continuity.

Background

John Gemello immigrated to California and became part of the Italian-American viticultural network in Santa Clara Valley. He worked for Paul Masson, learning winemaking at one of the region's most prestigious operations during the pre-Prohibition era.

Gemello Winery (1933)

Field Details
Founded 1933 (immediately following Repeal)
Location Mountain View, El Camino Real
Co-Founder John Gemello and family
First Winemaker John Gemello
Successor Mario Gemello (son)
Closed 1989

John co-founded Gemello Winery in 1933, the year Prohibition ended. The winery represented the Italian family winemaking tradition that had sustained viticulture through clandestine home production during the dry years.

The timing of the founding—immediately at Repeal—demonstrates the family's readiness to resume commercial winemaking as soon as it became legal again.

Family Continuity

John's son, Mario Gemello, succeeded him as master winemaker and operated the winery for nearly 50 years (1933-1982). The Gemello family winery survived until 1989, making it one of the longest-operating family wineries in Santa Clara Valley.

The Gemello operation represents a three-generation continuity chain:

  1. Paul Masson era: John Gemello learns winemaking
  2. Repeal era: John co-founds Gemello Winery (1933)
  3. Continuity era: Mario Gemello operates winery, makes first Monte Bello wine (1959)

Historical Significance

John Gemello embodies the immigrant winemaker generation that:

  • Learned from pioneer-era masters (Paul Masson)
  • Preserved winemaking knowledge through Prohibition
  • Re-established commercial operations immediately at Repeal
  • Transmitted skills to the next generation
  • Sustained Santa Clara Valley viticulture during the "lost middle" decades (1930-1960)
