Overview

John Burns settled in Ben Lomond in 1851 and planted what is widely recognized as the first commercial vines in Santa Cruz County in 1853. Burns planted on slopes he named Ben Lomond, establishing one of the earliest commercial wine operations in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

History

1851: John Burns settled in the area that would become known as Ben Lomond in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

1853: Burns planted the first commercial vineyard in Santa Cruz County on mountain slopes. This planting represents the beginning of commercial viticulture in the Santa Cruz Mountains region.

Legacy: The Burns vineyard established that quality wine grapes could be grown in the challenging mountain terrain of the Santa Cruz Mountains, paving the way for later 19th century pioneers including the Jarvis family, Capelli, Monteverdi, and Perrone.

Significance

John Burns' 1853 planting marks the transition from mission-era experimental viticulture to commercial wine grape production in the Santa Cruz Mountains. His success demonstrated the viability of mountain viticulture and encouraged the wave of vineyard development that followed in the 1860s-1890s.

The Ben Lomond area would later become one of the most important viticultural districts in the Santa Cruz Mountains, eventually receiving its own AVA designation (Ben Lomond Mountain AVA, established 1988).

Note

This entry documents John Burns' pioneering vineyard operation, which is distinct from the later Ben Lomond Wine Company (established circa 1880 by Coope and Billing).
