History

Jason Goelz majored in business and double-minored in economics and viticulture at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Began as a small lot winemaker. In 2001 purchased Syrah from Stephen Dorcich and made a single barrel. The two began working together; Goelz acting as a consultant, sales and cellar manager. Also sold wines under the Sapid label.

Dorcich had been farming in Gilroy for many years, selling fruit to several local winemakers. In 2007 announced partnership under which Dorcich would build winery that Goelz would lease. Partnership would take all Dorcich vineyard fruit.

Current Status: The winery property now operates as Carter House Cellars, a 380-acre estate boutique private winery and homesteading farm social club. Membership-based winemaking operation where members assist in winemaking process and bottle their own creations.
