History

Oldest existing winery in California. Founded 1854 by French immigrant Theophile Vaché, two years after Almaden Winery.

1880: Sold to William Palmtag (wines won silver at 1900 Paris World Exposition). Survived Prohibition. 1953: Purchased by Almaden. 1987: Sold to Heublein. 1988: Sold to DeRose and Cedolini families with Ernie Miller.

Cellar covering four acres was in Guinness Book of World Records as “world’s largest covered wine cellar” (capacity ~37,000 hogsheads).

Initial wines released as Cienega Valley Winery. DeRose label introduced 1993 vintage.

Main building straddles San Andreas Fault. Seismographic instruments monitored by UC Berkeley. Site designated National Natural Landmark.

Vineyards

100 acres of head-pruned vines, ~40 acres planted before 1900. Dry-farmed.

Historic ungrafted vines:

  • 3 acres Viognier (pre-1900)
  • 10 acres ungrafted Negrette/Pinot St. George (115+ years old)
  • 10-15 acres ungrafted Zinfandel (late 1890s) interspersed with Alicante Bouchet and Mission (Listan Prieto/Rose of Peru)

Wines

San Benito County (Cienega Valley): Focus on estate fruit from historic vineyards.
