History

2001: Cameron Hughes started wine négociant business, buying excess wine from well-known California wineries, working out of his car selling bulk wine to Costco.

Growth: Production exceeded 500,000 cases per year. About 60% from contracted vineyards and wineries, with fruit vinified under company supervision.

2017: Brand sold by bankruptcy court receiver to Vintage Wine Estates.

Post-2017: Hughes established new négociant brand "de Négoce," later sold in 2023-2024.

Current: Operates CAM X Wine as latest venture.

Business Model

Buys fruit or wine and bottles under own name. Hallmark is refusal to disclose producer names, signing confidentiality agreements to preserve winery anonymity.
