Founded 1983 by Randall Grahm in Santa Cruz. Initially attempted to replicate Burgundy in California, pivoted to Rhône varieties in Central Coast which proved more successful. Pioneer of Rhône-style wines in California.

Released inaugural vintage (1984) of Le Cigare Volant in 1986, an homage to Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Remains flagship wine.

1990: Launched "Big House" brand (inexpensive blends). 2006: Sold Big House and Cardinal Zin brands to The Wine Group. Peak production exceeded 450,000 cases/year.

Scaled back from 30-40 labels to focus on quality and innovation. Tasting room moved from Bonny Doon to 328 Ingalls Street in Santa Cruz.

Commitment to transparency and sustainability. Mostly biodynamic. Blended wines focus in warm Mediterranean climate of Central Coast.

Focus on Rhône varieties. Current releases include:

• Le Cigare Volant - Flagship Châteauneuf-du-Pape style blend (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Counoise)
• Le Cigare Blanc (2023) - Early-picked, lees-aged, bright acidity
• Vin Gris de Cigare (2023)
