A Configuration Management Database (CMDB) is a centralized repository that stores information about an organization's IT assets
(Configuration Items or CIs) and their relationships. It provides a single source of truth for IT infrastructure, enabling teams to understand,
manage, and optimize their IT environment. CMDBs are crucial for various IT Service Management (ITSM) processes like incident, problem, change,
and release management.
Asset management focuses on tracking individual assets (hardware, software) throughout their lifecycle. A CMDB goes beyond this by capturing
the relationships and dependencies between those assets.
In essence, a CMDB is the foundation for effective IT Service Management, providing a comprehensive view of the IT infrastructure and enabling
teams to manage it more efficiently and effectively.
