Getting the hardware components - sambthompson/SAAB-CDC GitHub Wiki
In order to get the latest, greatest board, refer to the Hardware forum section to obtain the Schematics/PCB layouts and BoMs for the latest version. It's worth reviewing subsequent posts in the new release announcement topic in case any errors or changes have been made. The Mouser BoM tool is not 100% error free, so in the event of a discrepancy between the Schematic and the matching bill of materials, you should assume the Schematic is correct, unless otherwise advised.
Printed Circuit Boards
The schematics for the main PCB are available in Eagle format. These can be provided to PCB fabricators in order to produce boards. OSH Park has a prototyping service that produces boards 3 at a time.
Versions 5.0 and 5.1 of the main board provide for an amplifier between the BT module and IHU. This is on a separate shield. Version 5.3 incorporates the amplifier components on the main board. Pending release of version 6 which uses a different microprocessor, version 5.3 is the recommended one to build.
Components/connectors
A project Bill-of-Materials (BoM) for the main board is available from Mouser, but again, components can be sourced from anywhere. This BoM includes the plastic box and necessary screws and nuts to affix the CDC connector to the PCB and the PCB to the box, but not the CDC connector itself (Mouser does not sell this connector in single units or at a reasonable cost).
If adding the amplifier shield, there is a separate BoM for this; you can add it to your order to save postage. The Amplifier shield is described in this announcement topic on the forum.
The CDC Connector
This is a Tyco (TE connectivity, was Amphenol) 12-P MINI-TIMER, P/N 827229-1. To get it, you can:
- $0, free shipping: write to Tyco (TE connectivity) for free samples, click the "Get Sample" button. You have to register and provide some project information justifying the need for samples, but once application approved, the shipping is very fast. However, it looks like TE have got wise to the freebie exploit and have rejected recent applications for free samples; or
- $15.99 each + shipping: purchase via Connector People (min order is now 1, and they don't have online payment facility; have to fax or e-mail CC details, shipping reported to be slow); or
- $25.41 each + shipping: If Connector People's lack of online payment is a deal-breaker, "Online Components" have a price match option you could try (since Connector People's price is better); select "Price Match Request", but I'm not sure they'd bother for 1 unit, since their base price is over $26 USD. If you only need one, it's not a million miles from CP's $18 minimum even at full price... Shipping speed is unknown. As of December 2017, factory lead time is 20 weeks. FIXME: Need feedback on this option.
- $7.51 each, min 5, free shipping: purchase via Aliexpress. Aliexpress has a reputation for being slow. Also note that the connectors from this source have slightly longer mounting lugs where they're attached with screws to the PCB. To preventing fouling the JP2 header, the right lug may need to be shortened to match the standard size. Based on this size difference, these connectors are not genuine but other than the fit issue (which is fixable) there are no reports of issues with these. (N.B. Changed Aliexpress store for P/N search; original link's price rose to over $10 per unit).
Note: guide prices quoted in USD, current as at December 2017.
