Tips on Resume Preparation - saayam-for-all/jobs GitHub Wiki

Following are some of the tips that might help you to get into your dream job. These are totally my views. Please take them with the grain of salt

  • Top heading of your resume should be your name. Make this name as simple as possible i.e. First Name and Last Name. If your name is a little complicated, you can also give your preferred short name so that they can call you/address you with that name easily. Most of the HR recruiters and ATS machines that screen your resumes start discriminating, though it is illegal to discriminate, simply based on your name.
  • You do NOT have to share your location/address info. Just contact info - Phone, Email and Linkedin link should be below your name.
  • If you have any prior experience, start your resume with one or two sentences like this - A senior engineer with "x" number of years of experience in "xyz" field seeking a job in "area". Companies like candidates with industry experience instead of fresh graduates.
  • If are a green card holder or a US citizen i.e. if you do NOT need any visa processing, then mention that also in your starting sentence like this - A green card/US citizen with "x" number of years....". Visa processing has become a big bottleneck these days.
  • DO NOT mention any years of graduation if you are a fresh graduate.
  • If you have prior experience, you need to mention the Mon,Year for your experience.
  • In general NEVER reveal any info, unless explicitly asked, in your resume, that work against you.
  • Never lie on your application or any where. You should be able to defend all the items/experiences you are mentioning on your resume.
  • Never ever give your legal documents like passport to anybody.
  • DO NOT sign any illegal contracts desperately with small consulting companies.
  • Your first goal is to find a company that processes your visa status. You need to get this confirmed before you accept the offer letter. They need to start the process after a reasonable period. If they keep on postponing by giving some silly excuses, you better leave that company to another who does your visa processing quickly.
