General Questions

Thanks for participating in this interview with us. First I would like you to know that if at any time you feel like you do not wish to continue for any reason, you may discontinue at any time. First, can you tell me your year in school and major/minor combination? (Also need to add a part about their results from the interview being confidential.) 7-10 students a day, science meetings.

  1. How do you feel about the current class registration system?
  2. Do you feel comfortable planning your own schedule?
  3. How do you prepare for course registration?
  4. How often are you able to meet with your advisor?
  5. How do you normally register for classes?
  6. What tools do you utilize to help with course planning?
  7. What features or areas of the class registration process would you change if you could?
  8. What features or tools do you think would be a useful addition to the class registration process?
  9. Do you find it easy to develop a course roadmap or graduation path for your current major/s and minor/s combination? Why or why not?
  10. How might we think about the college course tracking process differently?

Task Analysis Scenarios

Registering for classes

Interviewees: (University of Oregon) students

Brief description: The interviewee, a student, will be asked to demonstrate their process of choosing and registering for classes.

Potential questions and things to note:

  1. How does the interviewee find which classes they need to take to satisfy their major/minor/graduation requirements?
  2. How does the interviewee check which classes are offered in the upcoming term (and terms after that)?
  3. Which resources and tools is the interviewee using to choose their classes and schedule?
  4. “What factors do you prioritize in selecting classes to take?”
  5. “What non-academic factors, if any, affect how you choose your classes?”
  6. “What do you find most difficult about this process?”
  7. “What would you change about the workflow?”
  8. “Have you ever encountered any problems that have prevented you from registering for your already-chosen classes?”
  9. “What, if anything feels confusing, difficult to use, or unintuitive about the tools and resources you used?”

Plotting out a major, minor, or degree plan

Interviewees: (University of Oregon) students, academic advisors

Brief description: The interviewee will be asked to demonstrate how they would seek out the requirements for achieving a major (or any combination of majors and minors), and then will be asked to create a potential roadmap of courses that meet those requirements.

Potential questions and things to note:

  1. Which resources are the interviewee using to find out their requirements?
  2. How is the interviewee identifying which requirements they have already completed and which they have yet to complete?
  3. If the interviewee is considering more than a single major, how are they identifying common requirements and taking advantage of them, if at all?
  4. Is the interviewee able to find and use information regarding when certain courses are offered?
  5. How much time does it take for the interviewee, taking in the context of their current progress and number of requirements, to create a roadmap (or decide that the task is infeasible)?
  6. “How often do you try to map out a long term plan for your major(s) or graduation?”
  7. “What types of considerations, including but not limited to course load, expected term of graduation, or financial strategies, do you consider when creating a long term plan?”
